Kosovo’s Recognitions & Serbia’s "Information" Efforts

clintonPRISTINA, Kosovo — The government of Kosovo intensifies efforts to gain additional recognitions from UN member states concerning its status as an independent country. With the support of Albanian President Topi, Kosovo Prime Minister Thaci on this regard tried to lobby for Kosovo at the UN conference for developing countries in Turkey. At the same time Kosovo Foreign Affairs Minister Enver Hoxhaj visited the United Kingdom, where he met the UK Foreign Affairs Secretary William Hague and the Secretary for Europe, David Lidington. Reportedly both British politicians ensured to further support Kosovo in terms of its independence. 75 UN member states have recognized the independence of the Republic of Kosovo so far.

Meanwhile the Serbian newspaper BLIC was used for a counter attack on Kosovo’s efforts, by claiming both former USA President Bill Clinton as well as Finland’s former President and Nobel Prize winner Martti Ahtisaari accepted an invitation from Kosovo authorities to lobby for the recognition of Kosovo.

This was reported in connection with a supposed 10m Euro acquisition of funds for a Kosovo recognition campaign ("Kosovo Government pays for lobbying ten times more than Serbia") – seemingly in order to give the impression, Clinton and Ahtisaari would be paid for their support. As a "neutral" wisdom for its report, the Serbian newspaper Blic referred to "sources" from the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

However, Prishtina officials denied speculations regarding an official involvement of the two former presidents as well as concerning a campaigning fund of the Kosovar government. KON / NK
