The Coming Balkan War

ICTYIn the Washington Times Jeffrey T. Kuhner comments on the decision of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia – ICTY – to sentence the Croatian General Ante Gotovina to 24 years in prison. According to Kuhner the court’s ruling is wrong. Through this, Kuhner believes, “The Balkans – again – will explode with violence. … And the so-called “international community” has been pivotal in stoking the flames of ethnic conflict”. From his viewpoint “the U.N. court is a politicized vehicle that aspires to render history’s final judgment on the Balkan wars of the 1990s. And its verdict is clear:

All sides were guilty of atrocities; no party – or nation – was more responsible than the other. This is what Serbia has been demanding for years. It has sought to cover its genocidal culpability and national shame with moral equivalenceHence, the Gotovina conviction is a major triumph for Belgrade.

J.T. Kuhner is said to be an extreme US conservative – KON and NK editors don’t share most of his further published opinions – nevertheless this article fits to the current discussion in Kosovo on the approach of UN and EU to judge activities of former KLA members. Croatia has won the war – but lost the peace, Kuhner says – a lesson for Kosovo? Read more here >>
